BLAINE, MICH. — On August 31, Domino’s will begin selling, nationwide, a pizza called The Domino, and The Domino is, in the most literal sense the word has ever been used in a press release, a domino: a rectangular slice of Detroit-style pizza, cut into two pieces, served in a custom box designed to look like one.

Let us sit with that for a moment. Domino’s has, for more than 60 years, put a domino on a pizza box. A red-and-white tile with dots, sitting on top of a box, on top of a pizza, in a car, on a counter, in a life. And in 2026, the company looked at that domino, looked at the pizza inside, and said: why is the domino on the outside?

The answer, as Domino’s sees it, is that the pizza should be the domino. The Domino is a personal pizza — rectangular, Detroit-style, built on the chain’s existing square-slice architecture, a two-topping offering under the company’s mix-and-match menu for $6.99, finished with garlic seasoning — and it comes in a box that is itself a domino. Which means that for the first time in the history of the company, the box and the pizza are the same shape, and the act of opening the box has become, functionally, a reveal of nothing. You open the box. There is a pizza. It is the shape of the box. You close the box. It is still the shape of the box. The transaction is complete.

There are people in this building who believe that is a flaw, and we would like to address them directly. The alternative is a round pizza in a square box, which is what has been happening for decades, and which is the reason Domino’s employees have, since 1966, been folding pizza like it is a geometry test they did not study for. The Domino eliminates the folding. The Domino eliminates the gap between the crust and the cardboard. The Domino is, in the words of one customer who will not be named, “the most honest product I have ever been sold.”

"We've always said the name came first," a Domino's spokesperson said of the 60-year-old logo. "Now the product finally caught up. It's a domino. It's in the name. It was always in the name."

The Domino is not, as far as we can tell, a reference to the board game, and the company has not confirmed whether two Dominoes make a pair, or what happens if you order two and open the boxes and find that, in fact, there are two Dominoes inside, which would mean you have, technically, won something. The company has also noted, with the caution of a corporation that has learned things, that The Domino is not recommended for consumption while driving, which is the single most responsible sentence Domino’s has issued all year and the one we intend to frame.

THE DOMINO, BY THE NUMBERS

  • Shape: rectangular. (Like a domino.)
  • Slices: two. (Like the pips, spiritually.)
  • Box: a domino. (Like the box, but now also the pizza.)
  • Price: $6.99. (Like a reasonable thing, briefly.)
  • Nationwide: August 31. (Give it two weeks.)

At press time, Domino’s had not confirmed whether The Domino would ship with a second domino for “house” play, but the company said it is “monitoring customer feedback,” which is the food industry’s word for “we will find out by Monday.”
